〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Leon Camillia
CHARACTER AGE: 21
CANON ORIGIN: Completely original!
CHRONOLOGY: Immediately after Xerxes gets stuck in the human world, but Leon still hasn't gone to the human world himself.
CLASS: Hero, through and through (although he'd deny it)
HOUSING: I'd like for him to be randomly placed into housing with other characters!
BACKGROUND: In Leon's world, the fairy realm is real— and exists in parallel to the human world. There are only certain places where one could actually "cross over" to the other side, though (if they even knew where to look). One of these places (and the only one in the United States) is in Chicago. Fairy cities tend to sort of mimic the human ones on the other side— or at least, they definitely grow as their human counterparts do. The fairy counterpart to Chicago is called "Leek City"— but it's actually a lot prettier than it sounds. The whole city floats under the ocean— through magic, of course!
Fairy society is fairly simple to explain— there is one ruling family, the Lilly clan, and several families that hover around it. The Camillia family (which Leon is born into) is one of those families. There is fairy life outside of the nobles, of course, it's just mostly out of the scope of what Leon notices. There's poverty and violence, but the royalty and nobles are mostly shielded from that (unless they're into charity, which most fairies aren't.)
Fairy magic also varies a lot through the population. Certain fairies have much more magic than other fairies do— although they all have at least a little. The noble families in general tend to have more than the more average citizens, but that doesn't always hold up. Fairies also all have the theoretical skill of a glamor— or a human face to use while in the human world. However, fairies barely ever travel to the human world anymore, and some fairies are better at using their glamor than others.
Fairies also have varying degrees of humanness— with nobility being, in general, the most human-like in shape, and the less human ones being more likely to live closer to the fringes of society. In some casses, it isn't more than pointed ears and maybe unnatural hair or eye color that gives a fairy away.
Other than that, fairy society pretty much has existed as it has as long as anyone can remember. There are signs of rebellion and dissent brewing if you know where to look, but most of the nobles prefer to look the other way, either out of over-confidence in their standing or just sheer ignorance. The rebellions are mostly among people who would prefer a more equal society where nobles didn't hold so much of the power. There may even be a few nobles involved, but if they exist, they keep their existence very quiet.
The human world, despite its connection to the fairy world, mostly exists completely separate. Humans talk about fairies like they could exist, and maybe some people actually do believe that they exist, but there hasn't been a sighting in so long that most humans just straight up don't believe in them anymore. There is, however, an organization that doesn't have a real name (mostly they prefer to refer to themselves as the Hunters), who are desperate to find the opening to the fairy realm and bring fairies out into the open again. However, the opening doesn't generally reveal itself to humans unless they happen to be right outside it when a fairy opens it, so they haven't been successful. Yet.
Leon has known from a young age that he'd never really matter. The Camillia house was a noble one, yes, but it was an obscure one, that didn't command much in the way of respect. As a result, Leon was never pressured into learning a lot about how nobles should behave— he was just allowed to do what he wanted, as long as it wasn't a total embarrassment for the family. But all that would change when Leon met Xerxes Lilly, the prince of Leek City.
They met when they were very young— while Leon was out on one of his childhood adventures to the river, where he enjoyed relaxing. Xerxes had escaped the royal party, at least for a moment, and met Leon while he was playing along the river. Although this meeting didn't last long, they agreed to meet there the next week, and thus a friendship was born.
Being friends with Xerxes marked a huge change in Leon's life. Although it was initially very simple, things changed once the royal family found out. Surprisingly, they weren't against the friendship (he was a noble after all, even if he was a minor one), and encouraged Leon to enroll in the Royal Academy for the rest of his education.
Either way, he ended up attending school at the best school in Leek City, and it mostly went unnotably. He mostly developed his personality at school though— given that a lot of the students were more judgmental of his background. So he learned to be defensive and stand-offish. He would have started a lot of fights if anyone had actually been willing to fight someone who was friends with the prince. Therefore, Leon didn't really end up with many consequences for his rude behavior— not that he wanted to be nice to those snobs anyways. He also, on some level, didn't want to disappoint Xerxes or prove himself unworthy of his friendship, so that kept him from acting out too much.
Xerxes and Leon finished at the Royal Academy closer than ever, and they both applied to the Royal University, where they both got in. University was a bit different from the Academy, mostly because people at the university cared less about Leon's status than they did when he was younger. But Leon was already used to being his standoffish self, so he worked his way through the university curriculum with only Xerxes as his one real friend. It's worth noting that Leon started to nurse a very slight crush on Xerxes during their university years, although he'd never dream of acting on it.
He wasn't actually finished with university yet when Xerxes went missing, but that wasn't about to stop him from following Xerxes to the human world. The royal family claimed there were too many risks in going to find him only a few days after he disappeared, so after a few more days, he goes after Xerxes himself, into the human world, with no real awareness of how different it would be in a world where Xerxes didn't have the status to protect him. But he didn't care— he wasn't going to lose his only friend because his family wanted to be cautious.
PERSONALITY: Leon is not who you'd expect to be a prince's best friend. He isn't particularly graceful, or particularly refined. He's, well, blunt most of all. He doesn't hesitate at all to tell someone what he thinks, no matter how high the standing is of the person he's speaking to. It drives everyone he knows crazy, and also makes it hard for him to develop close relationships with people. He just never really got it into his head that he has to be nice to people if he wants them to stay around. He doesn't really think of himself as lonely, though— even if at first glance a lot of people think that he's a lone wolf.
That doesn't mean that his entire personality can just be described as "standoffish and blunt", though. If you manage to stick around and weather his blunt talk, he can sometimes be a little softer. Maybe he isn't the type to be nice, but he cares about people that he's close to. He doesn't really care in a typical way but he tries his hardest— to the point that he'll chase his best friend into the human world when no one else really wants to do it. So in a way, he's stubborn— once someone on his good side, he'll do literally anything for them. He might be a grump on the outside— or he never really learned how to get people to like him. Either way, he tries hard to protect the people he cares about, to the point that it might be considered stifling by some. He's very much all or nothing when it comes to other people.
He also has something of a mischievous side— although this only really comes out with Xerxes because he's known him for so long. He isn't the type to play tricks on anyone though— he's too serious for that. But he has played a few on the fairy nobility— persuaded by Xerxes when he said that he needed to loosen up a little bit. He doesn't really loosen up around anyone else, though— so good luck trying to bring this out of him. He doesn't really specialize in cruel pranks though. He's more likely to switch someone's food than try to trip them or something worse.
Leon is not a very curious person— he isn't really much of an explorer and is actually generally interested in keeping things at the status quo. Even in being friends with Xerxes, which could be a very influential position, he only uses it to allow his parents to have a little more standing with the nobility, which they greatly appreciate. He doesn't do it for his own sake, though— he's not interested in power.
Leon is a person of contrasts— between his initial standoffish persona and his care for his friends. He's not really aware of it though, and if someone pointed this out to him he probably wouldn't really understand why he appears so standoffish at first glance. It's not his fault that he values honesty above almost anything else— other people just shouldn't take it so personally. Some people, like Xerxes, find this attitude refreshing— and that's probably how Leon came to warm up to him more than anyone else. It took less time for Leon to get close to Xerxes than it probably would for most people, but that's only because they first got to know eachother when they were extremely young.
It's worth noting that after Xerxes leaves Leek City for Chicago, on a mission that only he knows, that when Leon follows him into the human world, his sharp edges do softer, a little bit. Without Xerxes to cover for him and make everything okay with his status as a noble, Leon does learn a little bit about being kinder to others on the outset, instead of being standoffish until he decides they're deserving of his trust. This is a very gradual change, though.
POWER: Leon can talk to animals. It drives him crazy because it doesn't feel all that useful as a power, especially compared to some fairies. But it's his, and maybe he'll find more use for it in Heropa.
He also has a very weak glamor (ability to change his appearance), but pretty much all he can do is cover up his pointy ears, and even that takes a lot of effort for him so he doesn't usually bother.
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: I'm looking for someone.
[Leon scowls a little bit at the camera, like that would somehow get people to give it up faster.]
He's got blond hair, dark eyes, and probably looks lost. I know that isn't a lot to go on, but I can't really describe his voice or anything like that.
I can't pay anyone to find him, so if that's what you're expecting don't bother.
[He snorts. There were other things he could say about Xerxes, but they all sounded like he was in love with him. Which, even if he was, he didn't want to say out loud to a bunch of strangers.]
His name is Xerxes Lilly. If he responds to that, tell him that Leon is looking for him.
[He hangs up, without any sort of thank you.]
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: TDM thread
FINAL NOTES: Leon is visibly non-human (he has pointy ears!), but he'll probably keep them covered up under a hat at first, until he either gets more comfortable or somehow learns to use his glamor better.
